Overture to "The Wasps" by Vaughan Williams arr. Sam Dawes - Berkeley Brass
Overture to "The Wasps" by Ralph Vaughan Williams for Brass Dectet and Percussion arranged by Samuel Dawes performed by Berkeley Brass https://www.instagram.com/berkeleybrass Performers (left to right) : Thomas Thornton, Reuben Anelay, John Vernon, Eliza Talman, Alice Knight, Felix Rockhill, Jude Smith, Cameron Bahmaie, Jack Myles, Sam Dawes. With Sana Abu-Jabir on Percussion and Munro Ashton on Timpani. -:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:- Overture to “The Wasps” was written for a production at Trinity College, Cambridge, of Aristophanes’ play, The Wasps, which satirizes the Athenian courts of law. The overture opens with the buzzing sounds of the judiciary and continues with a bouncy tune. The year before he wrote The Wasps, Vaughan Williams spent three months in Paris studying with Maurice Ravel, whose influence is apparent in the middle section. Apart from that the piece is quintessential Vaughan Williams. And except for the opening buzzing, the piece has surprisingly little to do with wasps or with ancient Greece. Recorded on Monday 3rd February 2025 in the Duke's Hall at The Royal Academy of Music. Recording Engineers : Monty Bland, Barra Liddy, Felix Dickenson
